History of Altenheim and Shurmer Place

Our History

Altenheim is a non-profit health care and assisted living facility providing quality, licensed, residential and high-skilled nursing care with specialized services for the aged and their families. Started by a group of women for the German-American Ladies Society, it was originally incorporated under the name "West Side Deutscher Frauen Verein" in 1887. On September 18, 1892, following much hard work and many fund raising efforts and donations, the West Side Deutscher Frauen Verein dba Altenheim opened its new facility at 7719 Detroit Avenue., Cleveland, Ohio.

Since it began providing quality services in 1892, Altenheim has maintained a community atmosphere where qualified staff and volunteers, with dedication and compassionate understanding, address the physical, social, emotional, and spiritual needs of its residents. As the needs of the aged population and their families have changed, Altenheim has worked diligently to meet these changing needs, constantly focusing upon the well-being of individuals, families and the community served. Altenheim, since its inception has developed a fine reputation as a provider of quality care based upon a solid foundation of German-American values and traditions.

In response to growing and changing needs, Altenheim moved into its present facility in Strongsville in 1980. In 1991, the building was expanded and renovated in order to meet the demands and challenges of caring for a continually growing elderly population. This expansion and renovation project increased Altenheim's size to its current capacity of 150 beds.

Since 1892, many thousands of people, from all ethnic and religious backgrounds, have called the Altenheim home. Still strongly supported by the German-American community, the caring commitment of administration, staff and volunteer leadership have helped Altenheim become renown as one of the finest skilled nursing homes in Northeast Ohio. Those associated with the Altenheim take great pride in its distinguished history of accomplishments, and in our commitment to service for over 100 years in an ever changing environment.
